Improving the quality of life of my patients is the most fulfilling aspect of my career.

Periodontics is the foundation of any smile. A healthy periodontum (bone and gums) is paramount for any kind of dental care, whether a full-smile reconstruction or the most minimalistic procedure. Seeing the end results of treatment, and knowing I helped the patient achieve their goals, is what makes this specialty greatly rewarding.

I consider myself very lucky because while I do the thing I love the most, I get to know the most amazing people who bring their wonderful worlds to my days. The stories people share about their lives and experiences enrich my world. It is an honor to build lasting relationships while helping individuals enjoy functional, healthy, and confident smiles.

~ Dr. Fernanda Barona

Education and Experience

Born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Dr. Barona grew up in a family with more than 60 years of dental experience: her grandfather, parents, and older sister are all Dentists.  As an adolescent, Dr. Barona was fascinated by her parents’ and sister’s work, and how they made a difference when seeing each of their patients. She knew that she wanted to do the same in her career.

Dr. Barona received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at UCSG – Catholic University of Guayaquil. After moving to Canada, she then completed a Master of Science in Craniofacial Science and Diploma in Periodontics at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Barona’s three-year periodontics specialty residency was rigorous and challenging, allowing her to gain advanced knowledge of periodontal disease and placement of dental implants.  She has the in-depth experience and skills to see a patient, gather their information, and determine what treatment is most appropriate for the individual’s clinical and personal needs.

In addition to her advanced clinical abilities, Dr. Barona is warm, kind, and attentive. She dedicates time to listening to each patient, asks insightful questions, and strives to understand the individual’s desires and concerns. This information is then integrated into the treatment planning process, ensuring the whole of the individual’s situation is addressed. Patients are informed, educated, and engaged throughout the process, ensuring the best experience and outcome.

Professional Affiliations and Continuing Education

This allows her to provide accessible and innovative treatment options tailored to each patient’s situation.

Giving Back

Dr. Barona makes time to mentor new graduates, striving to help each find the area of dentistry that excites them the most. She has also volunteered to provide dental healthcare in rural areas and looks forward to returning to this opportunity.

Beyond the Practice

Dr. Barona and her husband, Dr. Jason Zimmerman, met in 2014 at the University of British Columbia during their respective residences. They quickly became close and married in 2018; in 2021 the couple welcomed their firstborn, Benjamin.

Away from the practice, Dr. Barona’s favourite activity is spending time with her husband and son. She loves traveling, waterskiing, snow skiing, and many outdoor activities. Of course, as a South American, Dr. Barona is a coffee lover and a foodie. She enjoys learning how to make latte art, attempting to bake sourdoughs, and trying to make the most of every minute of every day by learning something new.
